Reviewed August 21, 2026. Requirements and government fees can change; verify the current instructions on the BC legal change of name application page.

Changing your legal name is a significant milestone, whether it's due to marriage, divorce, or personal choice. In British Columbia, the process is structured but requires careful attention to detail. Point Zero provides the fingerprinting portion of the process when it is required.

1. Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a name change in BC, you must be 19 years of age or older (different rules apply for minors) and have lived in British Columbia for at least three months immediately prior to the date of your application.

2. The Fingerprinting Requirement

BC's application instructions generally require applicants aged 12 and older to complete electronic fingerprinting for a criminal record check. Confirm the current instructions for every person included in the application before booking.

Preparation tip: Bring the application instructions and acceptable identification. Point Zero uses an RCMP-accredited digital fingerprinting process.

3. Necessary Documentation

  • All original birth certificates (including any previous name change certificates).
  • A valid government-issued photo ID.
  • The completed Legal Change of Name Application form.

4. Fees & Processing

Government and fingerprinting fees are separate and can change. Consult the current BC application page for the government fee and contact Point Zero for the fingerprinting service fee. Government processing time is controlled by Vital Statistics and other receiving agencies.
